Subject: Take Back America!

Dear US Representative:

I just used a new web site, CheckMySSN.com, that provides Social Security Number monitoring to American Citizens, so we can now monitor our own SSN without jeopardizing anyone's identity. I learned there are additional people on MY Social Security Number!!! I want you to know just how upset I am about this. I feel very uncomfortable about the safety of my personal identity. I’m especially concerned that someone is using my SSN for illegal purposes, ruining my credit, and that someday I may be held responsible for taxes that aren’t even mine!

Even though CheckMySSN.com has provided me information that was only, until recently, available to businesses, it is time we Take Back America! American Citizens still expect Congress to come up with a program whereby American citizens can secure their own SSN. Perhaps a PIN or some other kind of password. I believe Congress was mandated to do this – and it’s TIME WE GET IT DONE!!! It is time for fair representation and action by our elected representatives.

Thank you for taking action.
Signed: Another Concerned American!

Stop Harassment by Collection Agencies for Credit Problems Caused by Identity Theft!

Did you know that it is illegal for collection agencies to harass you once you have notified them that the debt is due to Identity Theft? Here are some steps to take if you find yourself in this situation:

Every identity theft victim should know:

  • Contact the fraud department of any one of the three major credit bureaus to place a fraud alert on your file.
  • Close the accounts that you know or believe have been tampered with or opened fraudulently. Use the ID Theft Affidavit (www.consumer.gov/idtheft) when disputing new unauthorized accounts.
  • File a police report where you live.
  • Get a copy of the report or report number.
  • Contact any of the other agencies specific to your particular type of Identity Theft.
  • File your complaint with FTC.
  • Follow-up in writing. Attach a police report/number along with any other documentation you may have. Send certified with a return card.
  • Document everything!
